There are numerous choices when you decide to explore tile patterns. Be it for your bathroom, kitchen, backslash or just ornamental purposes there are numerous choice to choose from.
A large part of designing your kitchen or bathroom to give it a unique and bold look is to select a unique tile design. Apart from the most common Grid and brickwork style tile designs, the second most popular designs are herringbone tile pattern and chevron tile pattern. Even though they look pretty much the same, there are big differences on how these patterns are set up and installed.
The herringbone pattern has been around for some time. The major advantage is that it does not require any special tiles or cutting to install the herringbone pattern. They can be completed with rectangular tiles that is found in any hardware store.
Herringbone pattern is a tried and tested method and it is found over the years to withstand stress pretty well. Using a darker to lighter contrast between tile and grout will give you an amazing rusting look.
This design will make the most overlooked areas of your house the center piece. Very few home improvement ideas have that capability.
Even through Herringbone Pattern comes with its own advantages, the major disadvantage is the installation itself. It takes more tile and effort in cutting and leveling the tiles. Even a small spacing difference can cause the pattern to look really bad. Precision is really important.
For the Herringbone pattern, you also need extra tile because you loose a lot of materials especially at the corners while cutting.

While Herringbone pattern is the modern twist of a classic design, chevron pattern can be called its much younger versatile cousin. The major difference is this – Herringbone tiles are rectangular where as Chevron tiles is made of interlocking parallelograms, joined at the end to create a continuous zigzag design that can run from wall to wall.
You can use the tiles that slightly contrast to give the pattern a unique feel. You can mix and match different colors of tiles and grout to create your perfect deign.
The disadvantage of Chevron Pattern is what makes it most popular. The zigzag patters are hard to find – You will not have as much variety as Herringbone Pattern.
This pattern is very hard to do on your own. Even the slightest mistake will ruin the entire pattern. So you definitely pay more for a highly experienced pro to make this design for you.
